Travels with Gannon and Wyatt – High Quality Adventure, Action, and Intrigue for young readers!!!
Wish I had these books when I was a kid!!!! When the series of 3 “Travels with Gannon and Wyatt” books arrived for my review, I was immediately impressed with the quality of the books. Hardcover, and interesting graphics intrigued me and compelled me to look further. I could tell as I quickly perused the pages that these books were more than just a story. These had good educational content served up in a delicious way to interest the young reader in subjects like geography, history, and archaeology. There were no wizards, werewolves, vampires or zombies…..just good clean adventure written in excellent vocabulary. The subject matter wasn’t “dumbed down” for kids but rather presented educational information in a fun exciting way that wasn’t at all “textbooky””. Authors Patti Wheeler and Keith Hemstreet have done a great job creating a both fun and educational experience for middle-school kids.
At first appearance one might think that these books would be of interest to just boys, as they are about adventuring twin brothers so I decided to have a young friend of mine, 9 year old Olivia Whitehouse, read one of the books and review it from the intended young audience’s perspective. I presented her with the books on one Sunday morning at church. She was excited about her assignment. On Wednesday evening, she informed me that she had chosen “Travels with Gannon and Wyatt: Egypt for her review. She said she was really liking it and seemed genuinely enthused about the book. She particularly liked the way the book was written in personal journal form. When I looked at the books, I took note of that also, thinking that it would encourage young readers to journal about their adventures. I had also noticed that each adventure had included a page of words in the dialect of the culture and their meanings. There were intriguing maps and photographs to peak the interest of the young reader. I highly recommend this book series to parents and grandparents who want their kids to spend some quality time with a good read.
Liv really enjoyed her read of “Travels with Gannon and Wyatt – Egypt” and is looking forward to reading the other two books in the series – “Travels with Gannon and Wyatt – Botswana” and “Travels with Gannon and Wyatt – Great Bear Rainforest”. I’ll let her tell you about the book herself in her vlog below.
