The Beauty of Maine

The Seasons of the North Maine Woods

This is a photo gallery of seasons in the North Maine Woods starting with spring and spanning until through to winter.

Home Depot lawn furniture, Home Depot Graden Club

The snow recedes from around our garden shed where all our tools and lawn furniture are stored.

Just at dusk the Super Moon rose over the spruce trees in the Southeast corner of the field.

Medway, Maine, Millinocket, Sherman, Baxter State Park

This view of Mount Katahdin and Salmon Stream Lake is taken from I-95 North, just north of the Medway, Maine exit.

Spring in the Maine woods

This may look a little intimidating but its a piece of cake in our trusty Jeep Wrangler.

Winding driveway near Mount Katahdin and Baxter State Park in Maine

Our long and winding driveway is over 1500 feet long. It allows for a secluded setting but can be a lot of work in the winter.

The scenic view provides an expansive view of the entire Baxter State Park as viewed across Salmon Stream Lake just north of Millinocket, Maine.

Mount Katahdin is the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Although it is only 1 mile high, it’s famous “knife edge” trail to the summit can be very dangerous!

I-85 south Lupine time

I-95 was just glorious with mile after mile of wild lupine covering the roadside.

Lupine Field near Allison Perrrins House

This field is just a mass of lupine with a nice variety of color.

Wildflowers abound in June in northern Maine.

The wild lupine in this field show more variety of color than the ones on the Interstate 95

Close up of purple cow vetch

The purple cow vetch has beautiful blossoms and is a member of the Pea family.

Purple cow vetch and wild madder in the fields

Our fields take a magical look this time of year as purple cow vetch pops up, sprinkled amongst the wild madder.

orange day lilies and wild madder closeup

Thw wild madder is such a beautiful weed that I don’t mind it taking root in the flower beds. It acts as a soft “filler” like you would use in a floral arrangement.

American Buffalo, bison, Aroostook County, Maine

Hmmmm….that does look like a buffalo…could it be?

Logging Tote Road, Maine Wilderness Road, Baxter State Park

There are 1000’s of miles of tote roads through the North Maine Woods that provide for some very interesting rides.

Looking out the Jeep window, Bill appeared in the mirror just as I snapped this photo.

Last week the Northwoods of Maine was ablaze with Fall Foliage.

Katahdin Snow storm, ice storm, winter icy trees

The trees here in the Katahdin region of the North Maine Woods shimmer in the winter sunlight like they are encrusted in diamonds.

North Maine Woods, Baxter State Park in Winter,

We tend to get some wild storms here in the winter. Some locals say it is because of Mount Katahdin. We live about 15 miles from the mountain which is in the heart of Baxter State Park.

Chicken house for Buff Orpington hens in winter

The chicken house and all the outbuildings were encrusted with jewel like ice diamonds this morning! So beautiful!

Mount Katahdin, winter in Maine, Blizzrad of 2013, Baxter State Park

These trees are along the edge of our lawn at the edge of the forest. Beyond those trees is a spectacular view of Mount Katahdin when the weather is good.

Winter birdbath, blizzard of 2013 in Maine

The birds won’t be splashing in the birdbath today. The blizzard of 2013 left us about 18 inches of snow.ODAY

It is but right now is the worst time of the year ….BLACK FLY season, LOL! The little buggers visit us for about 3 weeks and they are miserable. Their bite is terrible and they are so tiny they can get in your hair, your ears, and other more inappropriate places. Thank goodness they are here for just a short time. We all dress in little net bug suits in the spring here in Maine!
