Last November Bill came home from a little drive to Houlton, to get a part for his tractor, with quite a story. “Just down the road from the Amish village, I saw some buffalo out in a field. You should have seen them….buffalo in Smyrna.” Sure, I thought, come a little closer so I can check your breath. Where have you been? He doesn’t drink but you never know! Or maybe we can credit it to senility. The years are creeping up…78 after all. It probably was a moose! The man has been watching the Western movie channel way to much!
Three weeks later we had to go to Houlton shopping and he was insisting that we come home via Route 2 rather than the Interstate so he could show me the “buffalo”. So we did. “They were right down here on the left. Right here! Right here!” So I pulled the Jeep over and we sat and scanned the field. Nothing but a light coating of snow but no buffalo….not even a pile of buffalo chips. “I saw them. I’m telling you they were right out there. I DID see them!” Personally, I am voting that it was a couple of moose!
Two weeks ago we were coming home from Houlton and as we drew near the field I said, “I wonder if your buffalo will be grazing today” using a very sarcastic tone. But I had to eat my sarcastic words because there they were…bigger than life. Buffalo in the North Maine Woods!!! Somebody has decided to raise buffalo up here. There were enormous bulls, and cows, and babies…baby buffalos! The little ones are homely and cute at the same time! Fortunately, I had my camera so I could take pictures. Now when Bill tells his story of the buffalo up in Smyrna and people take the same attitude of disbelief I did, he has proof!
